All too often we can make assumptions about confident people that are not necessarily true.
1. You are Born Confident
Have you ever thought confident people are born that way? That they have a natural ability to do and say the things that elude you? Well, if you think this, then you are wrong. Self-confidence is a skill you learn. Nobody is born with confidence or a lack of it. It is the years of conditioning and external factors as you grow up that influence the way you think. If you tell yourself you are confident, then you can probably be confident if you need to be. It is simply a matter of adopting the right mindset and attitude.
2. Confident People are Fearless
People often assume that confident people are fearless. That they do not get scared. Again, untrue. People who are confident can feel fear jus like anyone else. They can have the same limiting fears and thoughts that can cause them to lack confidence in certain situations. What makes them different is their ability to push past what they fear and keep moving forward.
3. Confident People are Confident about Everything
Do you assume that confident people are confident about everything? They may appear to be, but it is not necessarily true. Someone who has the confidence to run a business may not be confident working for someone else, for example.
You do not need to have all the answers to be confident. It is about moving forward and working it out as you go. Confidence is knowing you can deal with any challenges as you come face to face them.

People are drawn to people with self-confidence. Without even trying, they inspire others. They are willing to take risks and use mistakes and failures as lessons. And they meet challenges head on. They do not let things stand in their way.

Self-confidence affects all areas of your life. It empowers you to reach for your dreams. But with low self-confidence you cannot reach your true potential. It will hold you back in many areas of your life. Once you learn self-confidence, you can become unstoppable.
1. Know Who you Are
Unless you believe in who you are, having self-confidence will be a struggle. Understanding what you stand for and having a sense of who you are grounds you. This empowers you to take control of your life rather than allowing others to control it for you.
To discover who you truly are, write:
- Down what you believe in. These are your core beliefs that are unchangeable. This will plant them firmly in your mind so they are at the forefront of your mind when it matters.
- A list of your positive traits and strengths.
- Down your weaknesses so you know what work you need to do to master them.
Knowing who you are makes you comfortable within yourself. And this gives you the confidence you need to be your true self.
2. Take Care of your Physical Self
Take care of yourself physically. When you do, it directly impacts how you feel. It boosts your self-esteem and confidence. You will walk tall and with an attitude that lets people know you are happy and confident in yourself.
Look after yourself. Pay attention to how you dress and your personal grooming. It influences how you feel. It will make you feel good about yourself. If you feel good, you look good.
Get into good physical shape. Make exercise a part of your everyday lifestyle. Exercising can turn around the negative image of yourself, improve your confidence and reduce anxiety and depression.
3. Take Responsibility for Who you Are
When you are confident, the world sees you as self-assured. So remember you can learn the behaviour you need. Be decisive when you make decisions. Avoid changing your mind backwards and forwards unless you are about to make a big mistake. Try not to continually apologise for what you think and avoid explaining what you do or why you think the way you do.
Eliminate procrastination and take responsibility for who you are by avoiding the use of terms such as:
- What do you think
- Maybe
- I don’t know.
4. Forget about what Others Think
Forget about what others may think about you. Who cares? Stop worrying about it. There will always be people who have a negative opinion of you no matter how you behave or look. When you worry about other people’s opinions, it wreaks havoc on your self-confidence.
Instead, put your ego away and focus on helping others. By doing this you free yourself from what holds you back from being confident. You know who you are and know that you have value to offer others. Once you understand this, your fear will disappear and you can focus on the things that matter.
Here are some things that can help you stop worrying about other people’s opinions of you:
- Tell yourself every day that it is more important to help others than it is to care about other people’s opinions of you.
- Do a couple of random acts of kindness each week; for example, pay for an extra coffee for the person next in line or when you cook a meal make enough to take to a neighbour.
- Become more educated so you are prepared to deal with what matters to you. This will give you the confidence to know you can contribute in a meaningful way.
5. Change your Body Language
Change your body language so you feel confident and show that to the world. If you walk around with slumped shoulders looking at the ground to avoid eye contact with others, it does not reflect self-confidence. People will know that is how you feel.
Here are some things that you can do to change your body language:
- Walk and sit straight without slumping. Keep your shoulders back to show the world your self-assurance.
- Keep your chin up when walking instead of being busy focusing on your mobile phone. Put it away and be present in the moment instead.
- Make eye contact with others when talking with them. You do not want to stare, but look them in the eye when interacting.
- Avoid fidgeting. Constantly cleaning your nails and playing with your hair, for example, are dead giveaways of a lack of confidence. Work hard to break these types of habits.
- Smile at people as you walk by. It produces feel good endorphins and creates a friendly, relaxed aura about you.
