Is everyone around your driving you crazy lately? Are friends, colleagues, family and your partner driving you around the bend? Does your mood swing from extreme highs to lows and back again in the blink of an eye? Do you feel totally out of control? Are you hypersensitive to every feeling, touch, word or look someone directs at you? This can be perfectly normal on a temporary basis. But if it has become an everyday occurrence, you may need to look a little closer at why your moods are swinging out of control.
When under stress or your menstruation cycle is due or you are about to hit menopause, mood swings can be out of control. This is because a hormonal imbalance often causes them. Your progesterone and estrogen levels fluctuate at these times which affects your brain’s serotonin levels. When you have mood swings you may feel depressed, have trouble sleeping, be irritable and feel deeply fatigued. This disrupts how your react to stress, your ability to think clearly and how you process information.
Men can experience uncontrollable mood swings as well. This can occur when testosterone levels drop after the age of 30. It causes depression, mood swings and fatigue.
Mood swings can also be a characteristic of some types of mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety.
Treatment for mood swings has normally been Valium or lithium. But these days there are more natural ways to manage mood swings.
Herbs and Foods that may Help Regulate Mood Swings
According to psychologist Carl Jung, your inner child is the part of you that influences all the decisions you make
and all you do. Your inner child represents who you were as a child but it never grew up. This is where all your
emotions and memories live, good or bad. These are what you learn while you depend on your family as you grow up.
While there are happy memories and associations, there may also be harmful and negative experiences perpetrated at
the hands of those who were meant to nurture and keep you safe. So if you have a wounded child, it will have a
negative impact on different parts of your life including your mental health.
Add Minerals and Vitamins to your Diet
The cells in your body need the right balance of minerals and vitamins to function correctly. So adding them to your diet can help you produce the chemicals and hormones you need. The minerals and vitamins you may consider taking to help control your mood swings include:
- Vitamin B and C. Vitamin B and C support your immune and adrenal systems, and may help reduce stress.
- Magnesium, zinc and iron. Magnesium, zinc and iron help manage issues that drain your serotonin. They may help reduce pain, spasms and cramps.
Eat the Right Foods
The old saying ‘you are what you eat’ is actually true. Eating the wrong types of foods can cause mood swings that can then cause you to overeat. When your diet is full of complex carbohydrates, including legumes and wholegrains, it can help control your mood swings by producing more serotonin.
Eating foods that increase your liver function can help to balance out the estrogen in your system and also reduce mood swings. Foods such as pumpkin, cauliflower, spinach, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, spinach and carrots are all a great choice.
Avoid toxic foods such as foods high in sugar, refined carbohydrates, caffeine and alcohol and food containing trans fats. These stress out your liver and can increase your mood swings.
Healthy Food Habits to Embrace
When you ditch junk food for the right foods, you feed your body the essential nutrients and minerals it needs to function correctly.
It is also important to eat regularly. Avoid skipping meals or not eating at all as the result may be a drop in your blood sugar levels. This can cause mood swings. It can also cause you to eat junk food and overeat when you get hungry.
Add vegetables, wholegrains and legumes to your diet. These include lentils, beans and peas that can help increase serotonin levels and decrease mood swings and hormonal imbalances when menopausal.
Adding vegetables like pumpkin and carrots as well as leafy greens such as Brussel sprouts, spinach and broccoli will support your liver function. This may help to reduce your mood swings as they can help balance the estrogen in your system.
Replace trans and saturated fats with healthy fats. Your brain is the fattiest organ in your body so you need good fats to create healthy neurotransmitters and brain cells. Healthy fats include avocadoes, coconut oil, oily fish, nuts and olive oil. These can also help to increase the good LDL (low-density lipoprotein) levels in your body. When you have low LDL cholesterol it can cause mood swings and hormonal imbalances. There is also a link to low cholesterol increasing the risk of dementia and other mental health issues.
Foods to Avoid
The following are foods to avoid when you want to control your mood swings naturally:
- Trans fats, refined sugar and carbohydrates as they make your liver work harder which causes increased mood swing symptoms. Caffeine and sugary foods are addictive so if you give them up they may cause withdrawal symptoms which may increase your mood swings.
- Processed foods are high in sugar, MSG and salt and have very little nutritional goodness.
- Instead of unsaturated and trans fats, choose healthy fat options.
- Caffeine and alcohol are stimulants so try to consume them only in moderation. They can make anxiety and depression worse which can increase mood swings.
- Soft drinks and fruit juices are laden with sugar so drink water or herbal teas instead.
- Just because something is low in fat does not mean it is good for you. It usually has high amounts of sweeteners to add flavour.
Let’s Get Physical
Getting physical is a wonderful way to chase away the symptoms of mood swings. It has a twofold effect. You get fit and healthy while improving your mental health. Go for a walk along the beach or around the block during your lunch break. Ride your bike or play with your pet in the park.
While your hormones are raging or stress is out of control, you may only feel like slumping on the couch with a pile of junk food. Doing this will just make everything worse.
When you do not feel like getting physical, do something gentler. Yoga and meditation can clear your mind. Even try a good massage will drain away the stress.
Regular exercise can help you relax and releases endorphins that help you feel good.
Get a Good Night’s Sleep
It can never be stated enough how important getting a good night’s sleep is for boosting your physical and mental health. While you sleep, your body heals itself. When you do not get enough sleep, you will be irritable and suffer from mood swings. It is well known that you need around eight hours’ of uninterrupted sleep a night.
When you have trouble sleeping at night, try to take a power nap sometime during the next day. You only need 20 minutes to help you keep going.
